Juan Domínguez (Valladolid, 1964) defines himself as a "conceptual clown, poet-model, unleashed narrator and curator of pleasure." He is a member of the generation of Spanish dance that debuted at the end of the 1980s, alongside other notable creators such as Blanca Calvo, La Ribot, Olga Mesa and Ana Buitrago.
He received training in classical and contemporary dance and video in Spain and the United States, subsequently integrating video into his performance practice and challenging established choreographic conventions. From 1999 onwards, he began to explore the conceptual, seen in The Taste is Mine, which was an examination of dance itself, and his performance Todos los buenos espías tienen mi edad in 2002, in which he sat at a table displaying written cardboard that was projected on a screen for the spectators to see. In an interview, he stated: “Previously, my principal focus was on the theme of movement, pure dance, and abstraction. I have now incorporated the word, and that the border between dance and theatre was much more permeable.”
His latest project, the 24th of his performances this century, will take off at the Festival de Otoño. Dirty is not yet complete, and Domínguez will present “the initial stage of a three-phase exploration.”
According to the artist from Valladolid, “this project works on the idea of a change of paradigm, touching with language, listening with touch”. In addition, he provides a written preview of the subject matter, which includes the following terms: "skin, epidermis and cartilage, parabolic antenna, melanin, waves, without waves, tympanum, oval and flexible membrane, hammer, anvil, stirrup, hair follicles...”
