In Jamaica in the 1960s, under the impulse of reggae, dub emerged, an electronic version of the sound popularised by Bob Marley, characterised by its borrowings and musical quotations. The French-Senegalese choreographer and dancer Amala Dianor takes this notion of appropriation as the driving force behind his piece DUB. Dianor, who began in hip hop, trained with leading contemporary choreographers (Georges Momboye, Françoise and Dominique Dupuy, Emanuel Gat) and, for over a decade, has brought a refined version of hip hop to the stage in works such as Point Zero and Siguifin, supporting the creativity of artists based in West Africa.

DUB is the culmination of a process that began in 2018, shaped by experiences and knowledge gained on international tours and residencies. India, Brazil, Senegal, and South Africa were among Dianor’s destinations. On another trip to the United States, he explored underground spaces and street parties, while an immersion in social media led him to discover videos spreading new urban dance forms.

Drawing on this extensive background, Dianor selected the eleven dancers who form the cast of DUB. They were required to master new urban dances such as voguing, pantsula, krumping, waacking, and new-style hip hop. This is what unfolds in the piece: a dancefloor where global hip hop finds expression. In duos, trios, solos, or as a collective, in small rooms arranged on stage like a block of flats lit by neon, DUB unfolds with unbridled energy, paying homage to urban dance and inviting audiences to join a vibrant party.
