Greek choreographer Christos Papadopoulos, one of the leading lights of contemporary European dance, shares that in his anger at a present marked by corruption, wars, environmental destruction and the rise of the far right, he turned his gaze back to his teenage years in his hometown of Nemea.

“I remember,” he says, “the lust for life, the speed, the unwavering drive, the feeling that anything was possible. That fearless confidence that the world lay before us, open and ours, ready to be lived as we wished and as we deserved.”

From this return to the past, he has created My Fierce Ignorant Step, a title that captures the contrast between that youthful confidence and naivety, and how he and so many of his fellow citizens have been shaped and changed over the years.

A decade after presenting his first choreography, a year after directing Nekyia, his singular interpretation of the Odisea, and fresh from winning the prestigious Rose International Dance Prize, created by London’s Sadler’s Wells, Christos Papadopoulos now brings his most personal work to the stage: “a performance about the euphoria of being alive.”

Ten dancers embody on stage the truth of youth, drive and courage, offering, as an act of resistance, a pathway of hope in the face of today’s world. And that path lies in the power of human connection, in the strength of collective action.
