ENGLISH"A dance-based exploration of the power that divides, the utopia of communion and the beauty of difference". This is how choreographer and dancer David Coria describes his latest show, BABEL. TORRE VIVA,which is coming to the Autumn Festival after touring the Montpellier Danse Festival, the Mont-de-Marsan Flamenco Art Festival and the Seville Flamenco Biennial.
The artist, a leading figure in the avant-garde flamenco scene, has brought together an exceptional team for this piece: Playwright Alberto Conejero; flamenco singer David Lagos, winner of the Andalusian Flamenco Prize; Luz Arcas, winner of the National Dance Prize, who brings an outside perspective; and an international cast comprising Coria himself, Federico Nuñez, Felipe Clivio, Kotoha Setoguchi, Lucía La Bronce, Polina Sofia and Yardén Amir.
In BABEL, David Coria draws on an ancient myth to discuss the present. The story of the biblical tower becomes a theatrical metaphor for “a collective body that wonders what forces separate us when everything should be pushing us to be together”, he explains. On stage, the vibrant movement of the seven dancers evokes a ritual – a single body that not only dances, but prays, rises and falls. This dance draws on the imagery and physicality of his previous work, Los bailes robados, which was inspired by the mysterious dancing epidemics that swept through Europe in the Middle Ages.
Political and social commitment, and a desire to explore the present through dance, are the company’s defining characteristics. In this vein, BABEL poses a question: is it a revolutionary act to build something together in a world characterised by ego and capital?
Throughout his career, Coria has worked with figures such as Antonio Gades, Pilar López, José Granero, Alberto Lorca and José Antonio, and with the companies of Rocío Molina, Eva Yerbabuena, Rafaela Carrasco, the Spanish National Ballet and the Andalusian Flamenco Ballet, amongst others. He has received many awards, including Best Show at the Seville Flamenco Biennial (for Fandango), the Best Dancer of the Year Award from the German magazine TANZ, the Lorca Award for Andalusian Theatre, and the 2024 Talía Award for Best Male Dance Performer.
